Umbria Jazz

Umbria

A long love story connects jazz to the Umbria region.

A story which renews itself year after year that is nothing short of the synthesis between high level music and beautiful glimpses of an ecnchanted Perugia.

There are no other festivals in Italy comparable with this one, both for its importance and the attention it gives to jazz music. Starting from the first edition, which took place in Piediluco in 1973, up until today, there have been many associated innovations and initiatives which contributed to promoting this event in Italy and around the world. Famous guests took part in it every year, enriching the various editions. Here are some of the names: Keith Jarret, James Brown, Chet Baker, Carlos Santana, Eric Clapton, Miles Davis, Paolo Fresu, Stefano Bollani and the list goes on and on.

From the beginning, as a matter of fact, festival promoter Carlo Pagnotta, established his objective of spreading jazz music throughout the entire peninsula, starting from Umbria, where small villages would also be involved in this great project.

Originally, the idea was to create an itinerant festival, completely devoted to jazz. In reality it was not so easy to manage the great influx of public and some difficulties emerged on the way, so, after stopping a few years, Umbria Jazz was renewed. Today it takes place in July, almost exclusively in the capital of Umbria, where notes by the most reknown jazz musicians can be heard, with some occasional drifting into international rock, blues and pop music territories. For this reason, the event has been transformed into a point of reference for artists, workers and the general public for whom Perugia has become synonymous with black charm and high quality music.
